Here are some extracts from the text:

  • 'I feel as if TS is a monster who lives inside me who makes my body do things that I don't want it to.'
  • 'It was weird at first with everyone looking at my movements but it doesn't bother me much now.'
  • 'I blink unwillingly like a confused owl all of the time. Clenching my fists and toes, I feel like a tree climbing chimpanzee. Other times, I have to stretch open my eyes as wide as possible, like a possum on a nocturnal fruit stealing expedition.'

Dr Gilles de la Tourette

Dr Gilles de la TouretteDr Gilles de la Tourette (1857 - 1904) was a neurologist living in France and was the first to diagnose and describe TS. He made several valuable contributions to medicine and literature. He was a dynamic, passionately outspoken man whose prodigious literary output reflected his own restless compulsions. Gilles gave a description of the Marquis de la Dampierre, a noble woman whose symptoms included coprolalia (the utterance of swear words). Gilles was shot by a deluded woman who was a patient at the famous Salpêtrière hospital.
